How Long Does It Take For SEO to Work?


I get that question all the time from clients: "How is it going to take for the SEO to work?", and yes, answering that question can be a mite awkward, when you have an overly-anxious client expecting, or at least really, really, really hoping for instant results. My whole take on the SEO process is: "A watched pot never boils". Don't expect instant results, when optimizing a website for search engines. 

Several factors can affect how long it takes for SEO (Search Engine Optimization) to work and produce results. It's important to understand that SEO is an ongoing process, and results may take time. Here are some factors that influence SEO success:

Competition

It might take longer to see significant improvements in your search rankings if you're in a highly competitive industry. It's hard to outrank well-established and authoritative websites. Don't think for a minute you're going to outrank Google on keyword: Google. Be realistic, now.


Website Age and Authority

Older, more established websites with a history of valuable content and backlinks get more traffic in search engines faster than newer ones. The newer your website, the longer it's going to take to hit the top 100 of a competitive keyword.


Content Quality

The key to SEO success is creating high-quality, valuable, and engaging content. Search engines have a hard time recognizing authoritative content right away.


Keyword Selection

You may need to wait longer to see results if you target highly competitive keywords. Your best bet is to focus on lesser-searched long-tail keywords, in the beginning.


Technical SEO

Making sure your site is technically sound and optimized for search engines can affect how quickly it gets indexed. You may even need to hire a technical SEO specialist to handle some of the tougher issues, every once in a while.


Backlink Profile

It takes time and effort to build a strong backlink profile. Backlinks from reputable sources are considered a signal of authority. When it comes to backlinks, quality is far more important than quantity. Too many spammy links pointing to your site can get you bumped off Google's search engine map altogether, so beware. The Google Disavow Tool can be your friend, in situations like that.


Frequency of Updates

You can improve your rankings over time by regularly updating your website with fresh content and staying on top of the latest SEO trends. Just like you don't want to wear the same underwear for 5 years at a time, you don't want your website content to stay the same, year after year, either.


Algorithm Updates

Search engines regularly update their algorithms, which can affect your rankings. SEO strategies need to be adjusted to keep up with these updates sometimes. You may need to stock up on your favorite headache medicine during some of those more extensive algorithm updates.

Because of these factors, it's hard to give an exact timeframe for SEO success. Some websites see improvements in a few weeks or months, while others take six months to a year. In the long run, SEO efforts can yield substantial benefits if you're patient and committed.


In addition, SEO is an ongoing process, not just a one-time thing. In order to stay competitive in the search results, you need to keep updating your website and content. In time, SEO can lead to better visibility and organic traffic for your website. So to summarize, don't stare at that pot for too long, or else you'll drive yourself insane waiting for it to boil

So, you're the webmaster for a brand-spanking new website, and you're having trouble getting on Google's search map? Well, have you checked your backlinks? What are backlinks, you ask? For the answer to that question, go here. If you don't know where to check your backlinks, then you should probably make sure you've registered your site with Google Search Console, before reading any further. 

Now that you've brushed up on your definition of today's main topic, now we can get back to brass tacks and talk about how to find them for your new site. Before you proceed, beware! Do this part wrong, and you can hurt your website more than help it. Don't be concerned about the number of backlinks. It's not the quantity that affects your SEO; it's the quality. One really, really good backlink is worth more of its weight in gold than a thousand lower-quality backlinks.

Building quality backlinks for a new site can be tough, but it's essential for improving your site's authority and rankings. If you're just starting out, here are some strategies to find quality backlinks:

Create High-Quality Content

Start by creating useful, relevant content that others will want to link to before you start looking for links. Over time, high-quality content gets backlinks. Remember: Content is King!

Guest Blogging:

Get your name out there by writing guest posts for reputable websites. Getting backlinks from authoritative websites is easy with guest contributions. Check your guest posts to make sure they're useful, not just promotional. Some websites have filters for guest posts, so if your post or your website comes off as too spammy, don't expect it to stay there too long.

Broken Link Building

Look for broken links on other sites that relate to yours. Contact the site owner or webmaster and suggest your content as a replacement for the broken link. Using this approach can be very effective if you have valuable content that matches the broken link.

Resource Link Building

Make content that's comprehensive, informative, and evergreen (like ultimate guides, resource lists, infographics). Tell other website owners about your great resource. Some people may link to it as a reference if they find it helpful.

Participate in Forums and Q&A Sites

Participate in online forums related to your niche. Answer questions with helpful answers and link to your website when appropriate.

Build Relationships with Others in Your Niche

You can't succeed online without networking. Get to know bloggers, website owners, and influencers. When your valuable content is discovered, you can get organic backlinks.

Create Infographics

There's something visually appealing about infographics, and they're easy to share. Share informative infographics on your website and social media. Content that's valuable and engaging may get links from other sites.

Utilize Social Media

Make your content more visible by sharing it on social media. Content that's compelling might get shared by others, which means more backlinks. Tip: Use #hashtags on your posts. This will help generate more views and more backlinks gradually over time. 

Submit to Relevant Directories

Submit your site to relevant and trustworthy directories. Try to stay away from low-quality directories or ones that aren't relevant to your niche.

Make sure you're watching your competitors

Check out your competitors' backlinks and see if you can get anything like them. If you need help doing this research, there are tools you can use, such as SEMRushAhrefsMozGoogle Trends, and more.

Create Linkable Assets

Make your content valuable and unique so it naturally attracts links. Original research, case studies, in-depth guides, or anything else that stands out.

Offer Testimonials

Building backlinks takes time and effort. You should focus on quality over quantity, because high-quality backlinks will have a more significant impact on your rankings. Be consistent and provide value to your audience and websites you reach out to.

When I first started working in SEO back in 2018, I was initially turned on to Ahrefs. The membership was a bit out of my price range at the time, so I went with SEMRUSH. Since then, I've used Ahrefs, SEMRush, Serpstat, Moz, and even Majestic. Most agencies I have done SEO work for over the past year or so prefer either SEMRush or Ahrefs. So, what's the difference, exactly?

SEMrush and Ahrefs are two popular and widely used SEO (Search Engine Optimization) tools that provide various features to help website owners and digital marketers improve their online presence and search engine rankings. While they have some similarities, there are also significant differences between the two platforms. Here's a comparison of SEMrush and Ahrefs based on their main features:


Keyword Research

SEMrush: Offers a comprehensive keyword research tool that provides keyword data, search volume, keyword difficulty, and related keywords. It also allows you to analyze competitors' top organic and paid keywords.

Ahrefs: Offers a site audit feature that scans your website for SEO issues like broken links, crawl errors, and more.

SEMrush: Allows you to track your website's organic and paid search rankings for specific keywords over time.

Ahrefs: Provides a rank tracking feature to monitor your website's search engine rankings for target keywords.

SEMrush: Includes content marketing tools that help with topic research, content creation, and content optimization.

Ahrefs: Offers content explorer and content gap tools to find popular content in your niche and identify content opportunities.

User Interface

SEMrush: Known for its user-friendly interface and easy-to-understand reports.

Ahrefs: Also has a user-friendly interface with a focus on providing actionable insights.

Ultimately, your choice depends on your needs, preferences, and budget. Each platform has its strengths, and you may prefer one over the other. You should try the free trials of both tools to see which is better for your SEO and digital marketing needs. In addition, I recommend checking for the latest reviews and comparisons of SEO tools, in order to fine-tune your preferences. Recently, I was asked how I would explain Search Engine Optimization to a beginner. This is how I responded:

  • Imagine the internet as a giant library of books. Each book represents a website, and the librarian functions like a search engine (e.g., Google). If you ask the librarian a question (enter a search query), she will suggest books relevant to your question (display results). SEO would be like assigning a Dewey Decimal system number to a book, according to how people might search for it. 

Having taught beginning band for roughly 20 years, I've learned to break down every idea and objective into simple, bite-sized steps.

SEO (Search Engine Optimization) is indeed a complex topic, but I'll simplify it for you. Here's a beginner's guide to SEO:

Understand What SEO Is

Search engine optimization (SEO) is the process of improving your website's visibility on search engines. You want to rank higher in Google, Bing, or Yahoo, so that you can get organic (non-paid) traffic.

Keyword Research

Start by identifying relevant keywords and phrases people use to search for your website. To find relevant and popular keywords, use Google Keyword Planner, Ubersuggest, SEMRush, or Ahrefs.

On-Page Optimization

Optimize your website's individual pages for specific keywords. This involves:

  • Including the target keyword in the page title.

  • Writing a compelling and relevant meta description that includes the keyword.

  • Using the keyword naturally within the page content (but avoid keyword stuffing).

  • Organizing content with headings (H1, H2, H3) to make it more readable.

  • Using descriptive URLs with relevant keywords.

Quality Content

Produce high-quality content your target audience will find valuable and relevant. Content with high engagement is more likely to get shared and linked to.

Mobile Friendliness

People use smartphones and tablets more and more to browse the internet. Make your website mobile-friendly. Google ranks sites based on their mobile friendliness.

Page Loading Speed

Make your website load faster by compressing images, using caching, and minimizing code. Fast loading sites improve user experience and SEO.

Link Building

Increase your website's visibility by gaining high-quality links. The backlinks you receive to your site signal search engines that it has value.

Social Media Presence

Use social media to engage with your audience. Although social media doesn't directly affect SEO, it can increase your content's visibility, which can lead to more links.

Technical SEO

Make sure your website is crawlable and indexable. Make sure broken links are fixed, XML sitemaps are used, and robots.txt files are created.

Regular Updates

Keep your website fresh with fresh content and review and improve your SEO efforts regularly.

Avoid Black Hat SEO

Don't use unethical practices like keyword stuffing, cloaking, hidden text, or buying links. Search engines can penalize or ban sites that engage in such practices.

For some people the transition from Google Analytics UA to GA4 was like learning their ABC's in kindergarten, and then having to scrap all that and learn Sanskrit in the 1st grade. There was most certainly a steep learning curve that plagued many long-time webmasters and SEO's alike. 


Here are some advantages and disadvantages of Google Analytics GA4 as of September 2021:


Advantages of Google Analytics GA4:


Enhanced User-Centric Approach: 

GA4 focuses on individual user behavior across various devices and platforms, allowing a more holistic view of the customer journey, which is especially important in a multichannel world.

Privacy-Centric Data Collection: 

GA4 complies with evolving data protection regulations by incorporating privacy-centric data collection practices. Instead of cookies, it uses an event-based model.

Cross-Platform Tracking: 

GA4 offers improved cross-platform tracking by default, enabling businesses to understand how users interact with their content across websites, apps, and other digital assets.

Machine Learning-Driven Insights: 

This new version enables businesses to make data-driven decisions by utilizing Google's machine-learning capabilities.

Simplified Event Tracking: 

With GA4, you can track and measure custom events aligned with your business objectives.


Disadvantages of Google Analytics GA4:


Limited Historical Data: 

As GA4 is a new platform, historical data may not be fully compatible with the previous version (Universal Analytics). This can limit the ability to compare long-term trends.

Learning Curve: 

GA4 introduces several new concepts and a different interface, so users familiar with the previous version may have a steep learning curve to overcome. I, personally, had this trouble, when making the transition to GA4.

Third-Party Integration: 

GA4 might not be fully integrated with some third-party tools and platforms at launch, potentially limiting seamless data integration. If you're using a WordPress-based site, make sure you keep your analytics plugins up to date.  

Customization Challenges: 

GA4 allows more flexibility with custom event tracking, but setting up complex customizations requires more technical expertise.

Reporting Differences: 

GA4's reporting interface and data structure differ significantly from Universal Analytics, requiring users to adapt their workflows.

As an SEO with over 5 years of experience in designing multiple websites from the ground up and doing all the SEO on them, I cannot stress enough how important it is to get a new website hooked up to Google Analytics and Google Search Console from literally Day 1 your website goes live. 

After starting a new website, it can take a week or more for Google to discover your web pages, and even longer to index them. Sometimes, Google will crawl a web page several times, and not index them at all, until you submit a link manually through Google Search Console. SEO Case Study: Local Dog Breeder


Business Name: [REDACTED]

I began this SEO project in June of 2023. At the time, the website was receiving zero organic traffic. This was a WordPress-based site, and I’ve been working with WordPress since 2018, so completing the basic SEO was not a difficult process. I usually start my SEO process by conducting a website audit using Screaming Frog, noting the pages that have missing or incomplete metadata. After installing the appropriate SEO plugins, I went into the settings and did a basic meta description template for most pages, and then I went into each individual web page and set up a customized meta description based on the focus keywords that a user was most likely to search for.  Then I added alt attributes to the picture images, making sure that the focus keywords were present in the alt attributes. I then went over the text on each page to make sure that the focus keywords were present in the title tags and in the first paragraph of the text, double-checking to make sure the keyword didn’t appear too often in the text. I then made sure the website was properly connected to Google Analytics and Google Search Console, and then I did a second website audit to double-check my work. 

It usually takes 3-4 days for Google to crawl a website and update its data within Google Search Console, and it can take a week or more for a web page to appear in Google’s Search Results. However, it can take upwards of 60 days or more for any SEO work done to reflect within Google’s Search Results as a whole fully. As of today’s writing, it’s only been about 45 days since I began work on the project, so I will likely provide updates on the site’s progress after 60 days.

Recently, I took an SEO assessment, and one of the questions on it asked who the father of SEO was. Five years deep into learning about and performing Search Engine Optimization, it had never occurred to me to research the history of how SEO got started until now. This is what I found:


The term "Search Engine Optimization" (SEO) was coined in the mid-1990s, and it is difficult to attribute its creation to a single individual. SEO as a practice has evolved over time, and numerous experts and professionals have contributed to its development. However, there are a few notable figures who played significant roles in shaping and popularizing SEO.

One influential figure often referred to as the "Father of SEO" is Bruce Clay. He is an internet marketing expert and consultant who began working in the field in the 1990s. Bruce Clay is known for his early contributions to SEO methodology and his efforts to educate and promote ethical SEO practices.

Another notable figure is Danny Sullivan, a journalist and entrepreneur who founded Search Engine Watch, a prominent website covering the search engine industry. Sullivan has been actively involved in the SEO community and has contributed to its growth and understanding through his writings, conferences, and industry advocacy.

I began my career with Search Engine Optimization in February of 2018 as a means of launching a permanent career change. It started with a blog on Google's Blogger platform, and then it blossomed into creating WordPress-based websites, and then eventually Wix-based sites. I ended up taking additional courses through Coursera and U.C. Davis to learn more about performing SEO, and how to use search engines to market websites, and make them more profitable without spending money on advertisements. Along the way, I did a little research on the history of SEO, and this is what I found:


Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is the practice of optimizing websites to improve their visibility and rankings in search engine results pages (SERPs). SEO has evolved significantly since the early days of the internet, and understanding its history can provide valuable insights into its current practices. Here's a brief overview of the history of SEO:

How will AI affect SEO in the future?

With what's going on in Hollywood with the recent Screen Actor's Guild and Screen Writer's Guild strikes over the issues of replacing human talent with Artificial Intelligence-based creators, I thought I'd chime in on my thoughts on the future of AI, as it relates to AI. 

What a lot of SEO's don't know is that Google's algorithm can indeed detect when a web page's content has been generated by AI, and if the content doesn't pass Google's Helpful Content filter, it will absolutely not get indexed. AI is a great tool for SEO copywriting and research, but it should not be used as a substitute for human hands or human imagination. Yes, the machines can detect other machines. 


AI is expected to have a significant impact on SEO (Search Engine Optimization) in the future. Here are several ways in which AI may influence the field of SEO:

Improved search algorithms: 

Search engines are always improving to provide more relevant and accurate results. Using AI technologies such as natural language processing and machine learning, search algorithms can learn user intent and context. As a result, users experience better search rankings.

Voice search optimization: 

Increasingly popular voice assistants like Siri, Alexa, and Google Assistant make voice search possible. Voice search optimization relies on AI to interpret and respond to spoken queries. Content needs to be optimized for voice-based queries, which differ from typed searches.

Enhanced content creation: 

Artificial intelligence can help create content, such as topic ideas, outlines, and drafts. Content can be generated using natural language generation models, reducing manual effort. Human creativity and quality control will remain essential for ensuring AI-generated content aligns with the intended purpose.

SEO landscape is continuously evolving, and the specific impact of AI on SEO may change as technology advances. To remain competitive in the future, SEO professionals must stay up-to-date, adapt their strategies, and make use of AI.
